Background
How this came about.
Carl spent fourteen years as a system administrator at an engineering and architectural firm, from 2002 to 2016. A project there involving modifications for people with disabilities changed what he wanted to do with the second half of his working life — and made clear how much of the outcome depended on details that were measurable and frequently unmeasured.
Senior Home Safety is the result. It operates as a trade name of Novo Industries Inc., an Alberta corporation, of which Carl is Director. The technical side of the work — the assessment tool used on site, the ranking method, the report generation — is built rather than bought, which is a direct consequence of the earlier career.
Carl holds a BA in Political Science from Dalhousie University and a diploma in Applied Information Technology from ACI, both in Halifax.
Credentials
What the designations are, precisely.
Both credentials below are professional designations, not provincial licences. Home safety assessment is not a licensed trade in Alberta, so being specific about what each credential involves matters more than usual.
Senior Home Safety Specialist (SHSS)
A course-based credential covering home safety for older adults: fall prevention, dementia considerations, aging in place, and the environmental factors that affect both. The course is delivered online through Age Safe Canada and is distributed by several organisations, including colleges and professional associations.
Verify the credential and its curriculum with the issuer: Age Safe Canada. Distribution by a professional association is a sales channel, not an endorsement of this business.
RHFAC Professional
The Rick Hansen Foundation Accessibility Certification Professional designation. Training covers rating the accessibility of buildings and sites using the RHFAC methodology, and is delivered as a multi-week course with an examination. RHFAC itself references CSA B651, the Canadian standard for accessible design of the built environment.
This credential comes from commercial and institutional accessibility work rather than residential safety. It is why the reports use dimensional standards as reference points rather than opinion.
Verify the designation and its requirements with the issuer: Rick Hansen Foundation.
Insurance
Novo Industries Inc. carries commercial general liability insurance of not less than $2,000,000 per occurrence and errors and omissions insurance of not less than $1,000,000. A certificate is available on request — email info@novoseniorsafety.com and it will be sent to you.
Independence
Nothing is sold to you afterwards.
Senior Home Safety does not sell, supply, install or arrange any product or modification. No commission, referral fee or other benefit is accepted from any contractor or supplier, in either direction. That is a term of the client agreement, not a policy that can quietly change.
The reason is straightforward: a report that ranks what to fix first is worthless if the ranking is influenced by who profits from the work. How to choose a contractor →
