Entrances and front steps.

The front door is used every day, often while carrying something, sometimes in the dark, and in a Calgary winter, on ice. It is one of the first places the visit looks at.

Stone front steps with cracks and a dusting of snow

What we check at the entrance.

Every finding is photographed and, where it has a dimension, laser-measured against CSA B652 reference points.

  • The height of every step, measured, and whether the steps are even with each other.
  • Handrails: whether there is one on each side, whether it is secure, and whether a hand can close around it.
  • Cracked, heaved or crumbling concrete, and loose or rocking pavers.
  • Lighting on the path and at the door, and where the switch is.
  • The size of the landing at the door, and whether there is somewhere to set bags down while unlocking.
  • The height of the door threshold.
  • Where meltwater from roofs and downspouts runs and freezes.
  • Whether the house number can be seen from the street at night, for emergency services.

Fixes the report often recommends.

These are examples, not a package. The report recommends only what this home needs, and says when something can wait.

A second handrail

So there is a rail for the stronger hand going up and coming down.

Motion lighting

Light on the steps before you reach them, with no switch to find.

A threshold ramp

Takes the step out of a raised door sill. In the sample report, a 150 mm threshold was priced at about $435.

Concrete repair or a downspout extension

Fixes the cause of the ice patch, not just the patch.

How each fix is priced.

Every fix in the report gets its own Calgary price from our cost index: the typical time the job takes, published trade rates, and current prices for mid-range parts. It is a planning figure, not a quote, so you know what a fair quote looks like before you call anyone.

You choose who does the work: any contractor, a handy family member, or nobody yet. The report ranks the fixes so the highest-value ones come first.

Independent

Nothing to sell you after the visit.

Free assessments are usually paid for by the renovation or equipment sold afterward. We sell no products or renovations and take no contractor fees, so every recommendation is about what makes the home safer, including what you can skip.

The rest of the home.

The visit covers every room, not just this one: 143 checks in 12 categories.

An honest answer about the home. Nothing to sell you after.

Book online in a few minutes, or tell us what is going on at home and we will call back within one business day, talk it through, and say plainly whether an assessment would help. No obligation either way.

Assessments from $395 + GST. Or email info@novoseniorsafety.com
