Stairs and hallways.

Stairs are used many times a day, often while carrying laundry, in poor light, or half awake at night. Small inconsistencies that a younger person never notices start to matter.

Carpeted stairs with a handrail on one side only

What we check on stairs and in hallways.

Every finding is photographed and, where it has a dimension, laser-measured against CSA B652 reference points.

  • Handrails: whether there is one on each side, whether it runs the full length, and whether a hand can close around it.
  • The height and depth of every step, measured, and whether any step is different from the rest.
  • Whether the edge of each step can be seen clearly, going down as well as up.
  • Lighting, and whether there is a switch at both the top and the bottom.
  • Loose runners, worn carpet and anything stored on the steps.
  • Hallway width and clutter along the route from bedroom to bathroom.
  • Basement stairs, which are often steeper and darker and used to carry laundry.

Fixes the report often recommends.

These are examples, not a package. The report recommends only what this home needs, and says when something can wait.

A second handrail

A rail on both sides, so one is always under the stronger hand.

Contrasting step-edge strips

Makes each step edge visible, especially going down.

Switches or motion lights at both ends

No climbing stairs in the dark to reach a switch.

Securing or removing runners

Often a no-cost or low-cost fix.

How each fix is priced.

Every fix in the report gets its own Calgary price from our cost index: the typical time the job takes, published trade rates, and current prices for mid-range parts. It is a planning figure, not a quote, so you know what a fair quote looks like before you call anyone.

You choose who does the work: any contractor, a handy family member, or nobody yet. The report ranks the fixes so the highest-value ones come first.

Nothing to sell you after the visit.

Free assessments are usually paid for by the renovation or equipment sold afterward. We sell no products or renovations and take no contractor fees, so every recommendation is about what makes the home safer, including what you can skip.
